Alina Sánchez

Alina Sánchez (San Martín de los Andes, 1986 - Hasaka, March 17, 2018), also known as Lêgerîn Çîya, was an Argentine doctor, internationalist, feminist and revolutionary, who studied at the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM) in Cuba. Sánchez joined the Women's Protection Units (YPJ) in 2011, and worked in the health system of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES). She died in a car accident on March 17, 2018, while travelling to the town of Hasaka.[1][2][3][4]. In her honor, the Tell Tamer Hospital in the Jazira Region now bears her name.[5]

Biography

Sánchez was born in San Martín de los Andes, Neuquén, Argentina, and grew up in Córdoba.

A strong defender of political independence and student organization from a young age, she studied anthropology at the University of Córdoba for a brief period. In 2005, she received a scholarship from the Republic of Cuba and began her studies at the ELAM, where she became a doctor. Sánchez joined the YPJ in 2011.[6].

About her experience with the implementation of public health policies in the AANES, Sánchez said “In the first year of autonomy, most of the doctors left for Europe. It happened like in Cuba. Hospitals were destroyed. In this situation we began to work with the popular assemblies. It is vital for us to be able to build small rooms in the neighborhoods, so that the women who are in the fields, who work with plants, can bring this knowledge to the education system. We do not see the military area separated from the civil sector. It is the same population, through the Popular Assemblies, that has to take care of their wounded. Now people understood that they are "their" wounded, that the self-defense forces are part of the town. Self-defense is organized in each neighborhood, and this process is transforming the entire population. Even to the doctors who are the greatest representatives of positivism and the power of the nation state”.[7]
