Abdulfatai Buhari

Abdulfatai Buhari (born 1965 in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, Nigeria) is a Nigerian politician.[1][2] He is the senator representing Oyo North senatorial district in the Nigerian Senate. He is a senator of the 8th and 9th National Assembly in Nigeria.[3][4]

Personal life and education

Buhari was born in 1965 in Ogbomoso, a community in Oyo State, Nigeria. He attended University of Ilorin where he studied Business Administration and in 1985 graduated with a BSc in Business Administration. Buhari then furthered his education to Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria where he graduated with a Masters in Business Administration in 1993. In 2009, Buhari obtained a PhD in Public Policy from the University of Abuja.

Career

Abdulfatai Buhari began his career as a General manager at UTC Nigeria Plc. He was also a one time commissioner Local government and Chieftaincy affairs in Oyo State. In 2003, he ran for House of Representatives and won, he was in office as Member of parliament till 2007.[5][6] In 2015, Buhari ran for Oyo North senatorial district and won the election under the All Progressives Congress.[7] On June 9, 2015 he was sworn in and his tenure officially began.[8][9]

In November 2015, he was appointed Vice Chairman of the senate committee on Industry. Subsequently he was again appointed Chairman senate committee on ICT & Cyber Crime.[10]

In 2019, he ran for re-election and won with over 18,338 votes defeating his PDP counterpart with a total of 107,703 votes to his name.[11][12]

In October 2016, he sponsored a bill to make election debate mandatory.[13] The bill titled "Nigerian Political Debates Commission Bill 2015" would aim to make all candidates of election pass through a debate overseen by a commission. The bill passed its second reading but was never implemented as it was kicked against by the Independent National Electorate Commission.[14][15][16]
