After the Canadian Major Indoor Soccer League ceased operations in 2007 the Canadian national indoor team was without a provider of talent, as most of the professional opportunities were only available in the United States. After the creation of the Canadian Arena Soccer Association the Arena Premier League was formed along with its developmental league the Youth Arena Premier League in order to provide the professional indoor opportunities for the country. The APL began operations in the 2017–18 season with the creation of the International Division with the Caribbean Stars AC, Croatia AC, Italy AC, Portugal AC, Serbia AC, South America AC, and Ukraine AC as the founding members.
