Eleven Ireland players, including their captain Brian O'Driscoll, plus their coach Eddie O'Sullivan were included in the British and Irish Lions squad for their tour of New Zealand. As a result, the Ireland squad for this tour featured nine previously uncapped players and an interim coach.
