- 1 March – New Zealand children's television show produced in Dunedin Squirt debuts on TV3. It later moved to TV2 in 1999.
- 15 July – New Zealand soap opera City Life premieres on TV2.
- TV One adopted new sans serif logo, replacing the Friz Quadranta has been in use since 1987.
- The 1996 Summer Olympics were held in Atlanta, Georgia, United States, where New Zealand won 3 gold medals, 2 silver medals, and 1 bronze medal.

gollark: Seems reasonable. It is kind of annoying that there aren't any phones which have hardware keyboards *and* reasonably customizable software, though.
