The 1971 Cossacks were led by second-year head coach Carl Peterson. They played home games at Cossacks Stadium[note 2] in Rohnert Park, California. Sonoma State finished the season with a record of two wins and eight losses (2–8, 0–6 FWC). The Cossacks were outscored by their opponents 153–277 for the season. This was the last season for the Cossacks with Coach Peterson at the helm. He finished his two years at Sonoma State with a record of 6–12–1, a .342 winning percentage.
In April 1972 it was announced that Sonoma State would no longer field a football team due to financial issues.[1] They did not have another team until a club team was started in 1979.
