Varnish

Sisal making a batch of varnish in 60 ᴇ.ʏ.

Varnish was a substance created by Tweezel which allowed the Second Age of Flight to be possible. It was applied as a coating on sumpwood Skycraft, allowing the buoyancy of the wood to remain stable in all environments.[1]

History

In 60 ᴇ.ʏ., Tweezel's first attempt at making varnish consisted of one hundred percent slime-mole glue, cooked for two hours. On his second attempt, he added oakpepper, and applied the varnish in two and three layers instead of just one.[1]

Composition and consistency

Varnish mainly constituted of slime-mole glue, but also included traces of other ingredients such as oakpepper[1] or wormdust[2]. Varnish was said to have included forty ingredients, which only the most astute could name[3]. The buoyant varnish was quite difficult to make, thinning if overheated[2]. When the varnish formed a stringy, unraveling line rather than a liquid trickle, it had reached the needed viscous consistency[1]. Only few librarians succeeded in making a perfect varnish in under fifty attempts[2].
