"So called, because the sketch books used had black covers, The Black Books became both the source and the repository for many of the ideas in the Edge. Once drawn and annotated, the ideas became ‘facts’, and we would reference them in the same way that writers in our world might use an encyclopaedia."
Paul Stewart [1]

The Black Books or Black Notebooks are sketch books used by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell to jot down ideas and drawings for the Edge Chronicles. The black books became both the source and the repository for many of the ideas in the Edge and are used by the authors as an encyclopedia of the Edge.
