Tacheometer
The tacheometer was an instrument in the Loftus Observatory's tower in Sanctaphrax. It broke during the arrival of a mother storm, leaving the Professor of Darkness close to despair.[1]
Behind the scenes
Tacheometers (or tachymeters) also exist in our world, and are a used for rapid measurements of the distance to a target to determine the position of points on the surface of the earth relative to each other.
