Reed-eels

A clump of reed-eels

Reed-eels were very dangerous, venomous predators that lived in the Deepwoods.

Characteristics

Physical

Reed-eels resembled long, thick, green greatgrass, but they also had small deep-set orange eyes and petal-shaped suckers. Their suckers could deliver a venom that caused near-instantaneous facial discolouration, bodily swelling, and death.[1]

Behavioral

Reed-eels nested together in large groups in underground beds. They protruded up from holes in the ground and used their resemblance to harmless greatgrass to trick prey into wandering among them, then attacked. If their prey tried to fight back, reed-eels would lithely retract into their holes to dodge. If their prey tried to flee, reed-eels would cunningly plait themselves together to try to trip them.[1]

Role in the Edge Chronicles

In the Twig Trilogy

In Midnight Over Sanctaphrax, Twig Verginix, Cowlquape Pentephraxis, Goom, and Spooler encountered reed-eels. Their prowlgrins panicked, broke free of their tethers, and ran away the night before the encounter, but the four of them didn’t realise anything was wrong until the reed-eels attacked. Twig, Cowlquape, and Goom escaped unharmed, but Spooler was killed.[1]
