Grey goblins
Grey goblins were a type of goblin belonging to the lop-eared goblin clan[1]. In the First Age of Flight, they posed a threat to travellers in the Deepwoods[2]. In the Second Age of Flight, some settled down in the Goblin Nations, and fought in its armies, including in the War for the Free Glades[3].
Characteristics
Physical
Grey goblins tended to be small, wiry, and agile, though not as strong as other types of goblins, such as hammerheads and flatheads. Also, grey goblins were long-limbed and bald.[2]
Culture
Combat
The typical grey goblin combat tactic was the swarm. Hundreds or thousands of goblins would keep close together, then launch a mass attack, using three-foot razor-sharp stabbing spears, serrated swords, wooden shields, and bows with barbed arrows. Armour consisted of a battered leather jerkin for each goblin. The success of the swarm depended on utter fearlessness, which was aided by drinking from bottles of lullabee-grub juice during and throughout combat.[2] The swarm, despite its lack of sophistication, was an effective strategy, but members of the swarm tended not to live through very many battles[4].
Totems
Traditionally, grey goblins were superstitious, and each clan adopted a creature for its totem. Totems included a vulpoon, a prowlgrin, a banderbear, and others. Originally, the totems were carved into shields and spears, but city-dwelling grey goblins in Hive continued the tradition by decorating their platters and drinking vessels with their totems. Occasionally, totems were added to other objects, like coracles, as well.[5]
