Foundry-croup

Foundry-croup was a disease that struck anyone working in the Foundry Glade, but particularly the furnace slaves. The terrible hacking cough caused by prolonged inhalation of smoke from the great foundry furnaces eventually destroyed its victims' lungs. Most of Hemuel Spume's workers died from this illness as well as overwork. Furnace slaves generally lasted little more than a month, and even the scribes in the Palace of the Furnace Masters succumbed after two years. For this reason Hemuel Spume always wore a guaze mask when inspecting his furnaces as protection againt the smoke, but even he had coughing fits.[1] Foundry croup was mentioned in Freeglader and The Blooding of Rufus Filatine.
