Cloud formations

Cloud formations were studied in Sanctaphrax by Cloudwatchers, who used the code of cloudcraft to describe the various formations they saw. Observing the clouds would allow a cloudwatcher to accurately predict the weather. They were then later studied by the Guardians of Night and Librarian Knights in the Second Age of Flight, and in the School of Weather in the Third Age.

Notable formations

The clouds of the Dark Maelstrom
  • Anvil rising
  • Anvil wide
  • Cursive flat
  • Cursive low
  • Kobold's anvil
  • Semi-log
  • Wattle cloud

Anvil-shaped clouds

Anvils were some of the most important cloud formations in the Edgeworld. They were formed by powerful air currents above the cloud, flattening out the top of the cloud.

Great Storms

A Great Storm was typically preceded by anvil-shaped clouds laden with sourmist particles. If anvils were spotted on the horison, the cloudwatchers would quickly inform the Knights Academy, so the Knight Academic-in-waiting could prepare for their Stormchasing voyage.

Dark Maelstroms

A Dark Maelstrom would be preceded by huge, dark, anvil-shaped clouds, merging together and gathering power. They would then suddenly release their power as one gigantic storm.

Kobold's Anvil

Used by Librarian Knights of the Second Age of Flight, as well as the few skycraft users of the Third Age, this cloud was a sign of fast, powerful air currents. If the pilot could fly above the cloud, they would feel the full force of these currents, allowing them to travel incredibly quickly. Zelphyius Dax used this to travel west across the central Deepwoods in The Immortals.

Trivia

  • Anvil-shaped clouds are real cloud formations, called Cumulonimbus Incus. They also cause severe storms in real life.
