Internet access faster on laptop with inferior specs

0

About 2-3 years ago, I built my desktop computer: Win7 Pro x64, Asus Sabertooth, SSD, everything...

Now I bought my first laptop. It has a regular HDD, no SSD. It’s connected via Ethernet to a NetGear Gigabit switch, which in turn is connected to an ActionTec router.

My desktop PC is connected to the very same ActionTec DSL modem-router, which has very rarely—if ever—displayed any anomalies.

I've always had the feeling that my desktop was not setup efficiently in terms of internet speed, but no clues why. I also bought a new Intel Gigabit LAN card for the desktop: I was always surprised that Asus only supplied 10/100 on the Sabertooth motherboard.

With the new Intel LAN card, my desktop/internet/dsl seemed a bit faster (?placebo effect?).

But my new laptop, connected to the same switch/modem-router seems about 25% faster downloading pages, and especially low res video.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? Any clues why this "makes sense?"

2So, basically, all this question is about is internet speed? – Daniel B – 2015-02-23T08:39:10.060

How is the laptop connected to the router? – Werner Henze – 2015-02-23T08:53:22.280

Yes, Daniel, I gave the laptop and desktop system differences so that those factors could be raised about the 25% difference in internet download speed. Werner, the laptop and the desktop are connected by the same brand of LAN cable, both to the same new NetGear GS105 Gigabit switch. The 2 systems are also the sole members of the desktop's Homegroup. – IfItsX – 2015-02-23T09:22:22.200

Werner, my apologies: The "router" is an ActionTec modem/router combo, the GT701D, with only a single ethernet output which runs to the NetGear GS105. – IfItsX – 2015-02-23T09:30:46.583

Mentioning someone works like like @DanielB by the way. ;) – Daniel B – 2015-02-23T14:01:49.050

Please provide your desktop PC’s exact specs, because all reasonably recent Sabertooth boards have Gigabit Ethernet. – Daniel B – 2015-02-23T14:10:28.213

@DanielB I have what now? ;) – None – 2015-02-23T20:15:18.310

Do an actual internet speed test and give us those results too – Nelson – 2015-02-23T22:09:25.707
