Low speed on ethernet port

0

I have a Dell Latitude E6420 laptop, which has a gigabit Ethernet port.

I have a fresh install of Windows 7 on the laptop.

I can't get speeds higher than 30Mbps, and I can't figure out why.

This is using the speedtest on speedtest.net.

Over WiFi I can get near 200Mbps. Plugged in directly to my modem, using a cat 5e cable, I don't get more than 30Mbps.

There is no software or connection settings that should be interfering, and I have the latest drivers for my nic. No proxies, not connected to a VPN etc.

This is really mystifying, and I'm wondering if it is just a defective card or a software setting.

I've tried the same thing in a virtual machine, using the adapter in bridged mode in NetBSD, Linux and Windows 7. It makes no difference.

What else can I try?

Tried switching the cable? I'd also try a speed test to a local server using some other method. – Journeyman Geek – 2015-02-13T00:42:12.910

@JourneymanGeek I've tried several cables, and my transfer speed from my NAS never gets higher than that, nor when transferring via crossover connection from another laptop. The speedtest is a good indication given every other device with an ethernet port can get over 100Mbps, at least. – Mark Powers – 2015-02-13T01:46:58.620

are you sure its not 30MBps (MegaBytes not Megabits?) 30MBps is pretty standard speed from many NAS's. check to make sure your nic is set to autonegotiate, and that your cable modem is the same. – Frank Thomas – 2015-02-13T02:13:00.847

I had the connection speed reduced, I'm an idiot. – Mark Powers – 2015-02-13T02:31:17.067

Eh, Post that as an answer and talk about what you did. Sometimes this sort of things happen. – Journeyman Geek – 2015-02-13T03:35:46.827
