Download VmWare Workstation ~ 500 Mb. Unpack. Find windows.iso ~ 90 Mb. Mount windows.iso or unpack windows.iso. Install vmware tools ~ 35 Mb.

I think this solution should work for your XP too, as I used for my ubuntu VM.

1.Search for an iso image with name ubuntu.iso in your host system. 2.Open your VM's setting and add a CD drive browsing to the path where the iso image is present. 3.Then start your VM , you will find the the VM tools is mounted. Just then follow the steps for VM tools installation as you do when the system is online.
