I'm trying to add a VPN through the network setting on OSX. I have added the credentials through iOS on my iPhone, they check out and I'm then connected.
I'm connecting to a PPTP. Example:
- Server address: vpn.example.com
- Account name: user
- Password: password
I keep getting this error prompt:
A connection could not be established to the PPP server. Try reconnecting. If the problem continues, verify your settings and contact your Administrator.
Any suggestions to why I would be able to connect through my phone but not my desktop?

I've been having the same problem and I'm pretty sure it's because only Windows servers can connect to Windows clients, and Mac servers to Mac clients. For instance, creating a PPTP server on my Windows server then connecting to it from my Mac never worked, but when I'd installed OS X Server on my Mac I was able to serve L2TP or PPTP from my Mac and connect from other Macs and iOS devices, but not Windows machines. Some ISPs don't allow VPN traffic, this is why many VPN services also serve/tunnel via port 443 (ssl). Have you tried connecting to an open VPN other than PPTP 1723 and GRE 47? – Daniël W. Crompton – 2013-08-14T00:14:10.513

I think I figured out why, my phone is connecting to a different network than my computer. Would this be a firewall problem with my wireless internet connection? – Daniel McGinn – 2013-08-13T19:22:43.800
It's possible (although not very likely IMO). You can only verify this if you can tether your Mac with the iPhone and try its (mobile?) connection, or try a different Internet connection altogether. – slhck – 2013-08-13T19:33:59.727
I was able to pair my phone to my computer and then log in to the vpn that way. This still doesn't explain why I can't connect through my router. – Daniel McGinn – 2013-08-13T19:51:39.267
