What's the point of setting the X display location to localhost:0 in putty X11 forwarding settings?

I read somewhere that you should set X display location to localhost:0 to get better performance.

But I don't really understand what it changes. My X11 forwarding works fine if I don't set X display location

1It may be that 127.0.0.1 goes via the IP stack. But localhost will go via Unix sockets, and therefore be faster (just because you see no performance hit, it does not mean that there is non). However I would think that ssh would set the default to be the performant way. – ctrl-alt-delor – 2019-12-20T19:22:37.570
