Pass VirtualBox Guest connections through proxy

The computer is inside a company and only have internet access through proxy. I want the guest inside the VirtualBox to access the internet without changing anything in the guest. The host is Windows 10 Enterprise x64.

I know it is possible, I have done it with Proxifier

Proxifier allows network applications that do not support working through proxy servers to operate through a SOCKS or HTTPS proxy and chains.

But proxifier is not free and not very cheap for me.

I would love a solution that works as proxifier works but I need it just for the VirtualBox guests, so I think there might me a more specific solution for this case, any free solution for VirtualBox guest connections go through proxy will do.

2You mention you were able to do this using Proxifier, can you elaborate? I have the same problem, but I also have Proxifier available. – Rune Aamodt – 2018-08-28T08:39:02.117

The solution would be to set the VirtualBox Proxy settings, which you can find under Preferences -> Proxy, see screenshot:

Preferences -> Proxy

EDIT: just noticed the part about SOCKS or HTTPS proxy chains. So might not work as you want. Let us know.

4Well, no. This won't work, this proxy configuration you just mention is for the VirtualBox application itself, check for updates and stuff, it doesn't affect the guest, but thank you very much. – Carlos Goncalves – 2016-10-21T09:07:33.000

Not quite. In the documentation 1.15. Global Settings it says: It offers a selection of settings which apply to all virtual machines of the current user or in the case of Extensions to the entire system: and then Proxy Enables the user to configure a HTTP Proxy Server. And in the bug fix there is a mention that the update now uses those settings too, so it is not just for the VirtualBox application itself. Shame that it does not work for you as described.
