When I delete even the smallest of files on windows xp the operation takes 3-10 minutes to complete.
I have read this can happen when the recycle bin has alot of items in it, and XP has to iterate through all the files. So I set the space usage to 1%, but even this does not help, the only thing that works is disabling the recycle bin which is not ideal.
Any known fixes to this?
It's less the size of the files in the Recycle Bin, but rather the amount of files. If you have like a million files in the Recycle Bin, that could cause the issue. But hundreds of files in the RB shouldn't be an issue, and the size of them also not. – Daniel F – 2018-09-09T09:07:11.510
I am getting something like this, even with a shift+del it is spending a long time "Preparing to delete" – Jeremy French – 2009-08-11T11:26:05.903
1I started encountering this on various XP machines of mine (both at home and at work). I think there was a windows update that triggered this problem, but I have no evidence, nor a solution. – Matthew Ruston – 2009-07-16T16:48:30.583
1Have you actually emptied your recycling bin, or just limited it? – kmarsh – 2009-11-17T13:39:26.530
Are you by chance trying to erase files that is media? For example, if you have images or movies, XP may be trying to create thumbnail preview before the files get erased. – Sun – 2013-11-26T18:56:52.213
