I'm trying to install a scanner by IP the same way you would install a printer by IP. I don't want to install the horrible HP Solution Center software but I don't know how to install a network scanner without the software.
I'm having a hard time googling this because when I search for things like "install network scanner" or "install scanner by IP" all the results are for things like Angry IP Scanner which is clearly different than what I'm trying to get.
Thanks in advance.
This is for Windows Vista, but Windows 7 instructions will do.
Most scanner manufacturers that are any good make TWAIN drivers that allow IP/network scanning. Certainly Samsung, Epson and Canon do as we've got a number of these in an office I support. Unfortunately because TWAIN has no network standard it is up to the vendor and, as a result, you may have to install their software. Sometimes, though, you can install the drivers and be able to use a third party scanning application (e.g. NAPS2) and it'll pick up your scanner if you select TWAIN. There's also the newer WIA which works but can be cumbersome. – Kinnectus – 2015-09-04T21:41:52.143
What about paint -> scan from device? Seems to be a standard interface to a scanner - but it doesn't work automatically from a network device. – mtyson – 2012-02-23T00:06:19.577
1As I said, no standard way of talking to a scanner by IP. There is TWAIN, and likely something new for USB scanners for scanners directly connected to one PC. – TessellatingHeckler – 2012-03-17T03:38:26.037
