We currently have a 3 node windows 2003 NLB cluster running in Multicast mode, for a IIS web cluster. We want to upgrade to 2012 R2. About 15 sites/IP addresses total.

  1. Can you run 2012 R2 nodes in the same cluster as 2003 nodes (6 nodes total)? Based on my searches this probably isn't possible.
  2. Is it a better idea (at least for testing purposes) to just build a separate NLB cluster, with separate nodes and IP addresses then flip connections over via a DNS change?
  3. We might need to keep some sites on windows 2003 till they are rebuilt, so a separate cluster may be required since its unsupported to run different windows versions in the same NLB cluster for a length of time.
  4. I want to avoid setting up a mid point windows version such as a 2008/R2 web cluster.
  5. All the web servers nodes will be connecting to the same database and app servers.

Trying to plan out the best why to migrate and transition from old to new.

Thank you.

Have you tried adding a Windows Server 2012 R2 host to the NLB cluster? NLB operates at layer 3 so I don't see how anything above that (like the OS or IIS version) would have any bearing. – joeqwerty Jan 15 '15 at 20:50
  • Gathering info before I build my test environment to plan out my attack. That's a good point about layer3, may work fine just not "supported". – FredS Jan 16 '15 at 13:30

Yea doesn't look like that works. stuck in a converging state plus I see in the event log: "NLB cluster [192.168.101.49]: An unsupported legacy host 1 was discovered on the network. The OS version on this host is no longer supported in a mixed cluster configuration. The cluster will remain in the converging state until all deprecated legacy hosts are removed. Please remove the desprecated hosts from the cluster." – FredS Jan 16 '15 at 19:03
  • Good to know. Thanks for following up. – joeqwerty Jan 16 '15 at 19:13
