We have a brand new Dell PowerEdge T320 with a PERC S110 RAID Controller running a fresh install of Windows Server 2012 R2. The RAID level is RAID 5 with two NTFS partitions, 1TB for the OS and 7TB for data. The server is an Active Directory Domain Controller and File Server. It is not yet populated with file sharing data and is currently pre-production.

Immediately after base installation, DC promotion, and software updates, I connected a 2TB external drive for Windows Server Backup. While attempting to create an initial Windows Server Backup (excluding the currently empty data volume) the backup fails immediately with "There is not enough disk space to create the volume shadow copy"

Full message from the event logs:

After some systematic fault isolation, I have determined that I can successfully backup while only including the System State and OS (C:) items. If I adjust the backup selection to include the Recovery partition, it fails. If I choose to include Bare Metal Recovery which implicitly includes EFI System Partition and Recovery Partition - it fails as well.

Questions

  1. From my understanding, there appears to be sufficient space on both source and destination, what is causing this failure of the shadow copy creation?
  2. How might I further troubleshoot or resolve this issue?

Change your VSS for the system partition to use the C:\ at present it doesn't have enough space to create VSS for itself so fails the backup.

  • This solve the problem. I ended up pointing the shadow copies to C:\ as the system partitions didn't have sufficient space. Thank you – sardean Mar 21 '16 at 20:48
  • I found that after making this change the backups were still failing, but with a different error. I had to also reformat the target volume (where the backups were being written to) to fix the problem, I believe the previous VSS failures had caused it to become corrupt. – Harry Johnston Aug 25 '19 at 20:46

The solution is to explicitly back up the C partition (without the -allCritical option):

wbAdmin start backup -backupTarget:E: -include:C:

I am not certain if this is the case for Windows Server 2012 R2, but Windows Server Backup in earlier versions was limited to volumes <2TB. This is because the way the software works is to backup to a VHD, and the VHD format is limited to 2TB volumes.

I can't seem to find any definitive reference as to whether the 2012R2 version of Windows server Backup still used VHD or has migrated to the newer VHDX format: if it's the former, this could be the source of your issue.

The workaround is either to keep each source volume less than 2TB - hardly ideal - or to select your backup set as files, rather than entire volumes.
