Well, what does `ls -l /dev/tty0` tell you? – Dennis Williamson Jan 11 '11 at 01:04

3Reopen. This question should not have been closed. It is related to xorg, a widely used (if not most-used desktop server) desktop server. I have this same error message. Perhaps the question title needs to be changed to "How can I deal with ..." or "What does ... error mean?" – Jonathan Komar Jul 25 '15 at 06:37

Do you have a modem connected to this machine? Not sure why it would have group dialout. That's odd. What is the contents of /var/log/Xorg.0.log? Try running:
startx -- :1
Also, what terminal is your user running on? Run a 'who' to see if anyone else is using /dev/tty0. Or better yet an lsof on it.
