General Info

My work uses a sonicwall firewall and when offsite recommends connecting to the VPN using NetExtender or Globan VPN Client (when on Windows). I have a personal laptop (Linux) and a work laptop (Windows) and have had trouble connecting with both.

Linux

On the Linux machine (Ubuntu 20.04 LTS), I can successfully connect via VPN and when I try to ssh into machines behind the firewall everything seems to work fine, but my internet stops working entirely on my machine. For example, I can't even load google.com. I've tried this over WiFi and ethernet connections, but the results are the same.

Windows

On my Windows machine (Windows 11), it's a similar story, I can connect via VPN, but the internet slows down, but this time it's still usable when on WiFi albeit much slower (it drops from 80 Mb/s to 3 Mb/s). When I connect this machine via ethernet, the internet is totally normal.

Summary

I can connect to the VPN with NetExtender and tinkering around behind the firewall seems to work fine, but running NetExtender kills or dramatically slows down internet traffic on the machine.

Extra info

  • I've tried two versions of NetExtender 10.2.839 and 10.2.828 with identical results.
  • ssh-ing from Linux into Windows which is connected to the VPN works, but is far from ideal.
  • My IT director at work has already taken a look at the results of ip route and thinks everything looks ok
  • My IT director also said the VPN is supposed to be setup so that only traffic to the company's network goes through the VPN and all other traffic is unaffected.

I'm pretty inexperienced when it comes to network details and VPN specifics. Do people have any suggestions?
