This is a pretty basic question, but I never worked with DNS Servers.
I have an OpenVPN server hosted on our NAS. Coworkers from the home office connect to the NAS with our OpenVPN, but windows machines can't resolve hostnames. They can only use the IP instead of the servername to connect to it. This is pretty bad for sharing network paths.
My workaround right now is to map the IP with the servername in the windows "hosts" file. This is much work for multiple machines.
I assume the best way is to set up a DNS server. But I'm not sure if that will work.
The DNS server will also be hosted on the NAS, does this DNS server then resolve hostnames for clients that connect to the network from outside via OpenVPN?
Do I have to set up the custom DNS address for every windows machine to work properly or will this work (once set up on the server side) automatically? Because then not really much work is offloaded.
