Michael was the co-founder and CTO of ROAM Data (now Ingenico Mobile Solutions), a leading mCommerce platform provider, which grew from zero to a $26M annualized run rate before being majority-sold for $120M to Ingenico. ROAM turns merchants’ mobile devices into secure point of sale (POS) terminals and turns the mobile marketing channel into a mobile sales channel by enabling secure commerce in mobile applications with convenient mobile checkout; the company won the 2010 Technology Innovations Award at ETA.
Prior to ROAM Data, Michael was CTO and co-founder of Marbles, the world’s first thin-client mobile software company focused on enterprise mobile workforce applications—and the winner of multiple innovation awards. Subsequent to ROAM Data, Michael was the CTO at RoamingAround, a company specializing in geolocation software for Hospitality, the engineering division of which was acquired by OnVocal in 2017. He currently sits on the Board of Directors for Albuquerque startups, SmartSpider.net and Navarch Ensemble. He has served as a technical advisor for startup Mergers and Acquisitions. He has led small and medium-sized teams of developers, domestically and abroad (including India, China, Armenia, and Croatia). He has been an early-adopter of numerous web technologies.
A longtime interdisciplinarian, Michael received his B.S. in Mathematics and Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University (with a double-major in Creative Writing) and his Ph.D. in English Literature from Boston University. He has published essays on art and technology in both academic and popular presses. In addition to his software enterprises, he has taught film, literature, and drama at B.U. and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
