I recently bought a used SanDisk SSD and I am curious to know if there is any way to assess the integrity of its firmware using information such as SMART or drive details.

In addition to SMART information, SanDisk Dashboard application also displays following details about the drive:

  • Model Name
  • Firmware Version
  • Model String
  • NVMe Revision / SATA Revision
  • NVMe Link Speed / SATA Link Speed
  • Serial Number
  • Maximum LBA
  • World Wide Name (a unique identifier used for storage technologies)
  • 4K Alignment
  • And some advanced drive details

SanDisk customer support suggested that you can understand if the drive has been tampered with or not using this information, but after searching many questions and answers on this forum, it appears that this is not possible.

Assuming the SSD has a tampered firmware, what prevents the firmware to send you manipulated data as response to the SMART requests? If a firmware has been tampered then everything you do could be a fake, even when you try to install a new firmware the firmware can send back success but don't do anything. So detecting a firmware will only work if the one who has developed the tampered firmware made a severe mistake. – Robert May 19 '22 at 12:15
