I'm aware that SIM cards can store malware according to this question but what equipment would be needed to do such an attack? For example, would you need a Computer and a SIM card reader or could it get infected from a normal Android phone?

  • a [sim-card writer](https://www.wise-geek.com/what-is-a-sim-writer.htm) perhaps? And a computer of course. – Maurice Jan 04 '22 at 03:52

You are incorrect, a sim card contains almost no memory capacity whatsoever and a SIM can only be written once.

A (very) quick search will show that SIM cards can store various things, like a simple address book and SMS text messages. It is entirely possible that a malformed text message or address book entry could store persistent malware. – user Jun 02 '22 at 14:10
  • SIMs are routinely updated over the air (OTA update) by operators. Look up GSM 03.48 for a common protocol used to do so... – Bruno Rohée Jun 02 '22 at 16:06
