When I tried to visit a particular website using Mozilla Firefox, I got a SEC_ERROR_EXPIRED_CERTIFICATE error because the website's SSL certificate has expired. If I decide to click on the "Accept the Risk and Continue" button, will my connections to the website still be encrypted even though the certificate has expired?

Firefox: Potential Security Risk Ahead. Error code: SEC_ERROR_EXPIRED_CERTIFICATE

  • In short - no matter what kind of certificate error gets ignored, encryption is still applied. Proper certificate validation is needed to be sure to communicate with the expected party though, i.e. not having an encrypted connection with a man in the middle attacker. – Steffen Ullrich Dec 27 '21 at 06:29
