When I first entered the information security sector in 2007 I remember reading about a dated trojan called Sub7, released in 1999.

Focusing on the legacy version, not the new release, has anybody been able to successfully use it for testing purposes?

I tried to set-up Sub7 to connect between two virtual machines (one running Windows XP and the other running Windows 7), ensuring I checked both were on the same network, picking an un-used port number, checking the local IP, and disabling Windows Firewall. However, the connection is never successful. For such a simple tool, I am likely missing something obvious, especially as I have had success with other trojans.

Sub7 is an old trojan, however for nostalgia sake I would like to experiment with it, despite it being almost useless today due to firewalls and NATs blocking incoming connections.

  • "the connection is never successful" -- that is all you've given us to work with. This is a troubleshooting scenario and you have not mentioned the troubleshooting steps you have taken. – schroeder Dec 21 '21 at 09:41

  • @schroeder I took common sense steps as listed in my question, such as using ipconfig to check for the private IP addresses of each machine, I checked that they were not the same, I even set-up a netcat server between them checking I could send data from one to another. I have recreated the server several times, using different ports. – user5623335 Dec 21 '21 at 21:28
  • ...ok, that's part of the steps I listed. You don't describe what "the connection is never successful" means. And you are not mentioning any packet captures, so, I'm assuming you haven't done that yet. – schroeder Dec 21 '21 at 21:33
  • @schroeder When I press connect within the GUI it says connecting... and then disconnected. I cannot take any packet captures at the moment. I am not the only person to have this problem, try the set-up yourself. – user5623335 Dec 23 '21 at 02:53
