New York Post

The New York Post (or the New York comPost) is an American daily newspaper that has operated continuously since its founding by Alexander Hamilton in 1801.[1] It claims to be the oldest daily in the US, and is the 13th oldest newspaper in the country. Throughout its history, the Post has switched political leanings several times; for much of the 20th century, it was a liberal, actively pro-labor paper. Then, in 1976, Rupert Murdoch bought the paper and turned it into New York City's voice of wingnut yellow journalism. (Similarly, his British paper The Sun was originally a left-wing paper which evolved out of the trade union-affiliated Daily Herald.). It is a favorite for anti-libertarian big government conservatives of the North who support gun control for black people.

Today, the paper is known for its racy front pages, which include screaming headlines[2] and juxtapositions that would be considered inappropriate in other papers.[note 1]

Why nobody takes it seriously
  • On December 11, 1980, the Post ran a large morgue photo of John Lennon on its front page.
  • On June 16, 1986, based on information planted by spooks reliable sources, the Post ran a front page story that Muammar al-Gaddafi was really a drug-addicted cross-dresser. The headline: MADMAN MOAMMAR NOW A DRUGGIE DRAG QUEEN. The picture: Gaddafi wearing lipstick, mascara, eyeliner, hoop earrings and a permed, spit-curled, middle-aged woman's hair style.
  • On February 17, 2009, the Post ran a cartoon about two NYPD officers who had just shot dead a chimpanzee. The dialog balloon of one of the officers read, "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill."[3]
  • In November 2009, Sandra Guzman, a Latina who was fired as an associate editor after protesting the "chimp cartoon",[note 2] claimed that the newsroom at the Post was operated like a racist, sexist frat house. She also claimed that the Washington, D.C. bureau chief stated that his objective was to "destroy Barack Obama."[4]
  • On March 2, 2014, a Post hack argued that NBA owner Donald Sterling's punishment for a record of racism was equivalent to being "lynched."[5]
  • On September 28, 2014, the Post exhibited their long-time displeasure of the Clintons by... mocking their day-old grandchild.[6]
  • Laughable levels of red-baiting, to the point of calling Bernie Sanders a communist for disagreeing with US foreign policy during the Cold War. They even photoshopped an image of his head on Lenny's.[7]

In the 1980s, Murdoch asked a friend of his (the CEO of an upscale department store chain) why his stores didn't advertise in the Post. The friend's reply: "But, Rupert, your readers are my shoplifters."[8]

  1. ie. After the 5 November 2009 shootings at Fort Hood, the Post placed a boxed headline on the front page that claimed that the feds knew about the instability of the shooter. Beside that box was another box with a story about Jennifer Lopez's temporary restraining order against somebody who wanted release a sex tape of her. That box included a glamour photo of JLo in a formal dress with a plunging neckline that showed off her cleavage.
