In Beta 1.6 Test Build 3, any newly generated world would contain up to 11 debug chests with every item in the game. The redstone wire item was obtainable in the chests 2nd and 6th from the left in the 24th and 8th slots respectively, in stacks of 64.

- 6th Beta 1.6 Test Build 3 Chest
Behavior
When placed, the redstone wire item creates a redstone wire block that will connect to adjacent redstone wire or redstone components the same as placing the redstone dust item. Placing redstone wire will make a sound effect while placing regular redstone dust makes no sound effect (redstone dust does not create a sound until 17w47a (a 1.13 snapshot)). Also, up until its deletion the redstone wire item can be placed in water/lava while the redstone dust cannot, although the redstone wire block will break soon after if liquid flows back into that block. From 12w05a-1 (a 1.2 snapshot) to 13w36b (a 1.7 snapshot), the redstone wire item can replace grass, ferns, and shrubs while the regular redstone dust item cannot. Both redstone dust and redstone wire can replace single layered snow. However, from 13w05a-1 (a 1.5 snapshot) to 13w36b (a 1.7 snapshot), snow layers 2-7 thick cannot be replaced by the redstone wire item but can be replaced by the regular redstone dust item.
