Java Edition:No Bubble Column on Soul Sand/Magma Block
Since 1.13, placing either soul sand or a magma block below water should create a bubble column. Creating this block configuration before their introduction does not create a bubble column. It is also possible to create with update suppression and the April Fools' snapshot 23w13a or b.
Obtaining
Before Bubble Columns
Before introduction of bubble columns in 18w07a (a 1.13 snapshot), placing a soul sand or magma block beneath full blocks of water did not create a bubble column. Updating to 18w07a and later[test] retains the state. Soul sand was added in Alpha v1.2.0, and magma blocks were added in 16w20a (a 1.10 snapshot). Note that magma blocks remove water sources above them in versions before [test].
Old Bubble Column Requirements
From 18w07a to 18w16a (1.13 snapshots), bubble columns required an adjacent water source to form.[test] If there isn't another water source adjacent to the bubble column, it will not form.
Update Suppression
Update suppressing the placement of water above a soul sand or magma block will prevent a bubble column from forming. Note that the placed water will still flow, potentially causing a crash if the placement of flowing water is suppressed.
