Jack o'lanterns are not intended to be equippable, except on certain mobs during Halloween. However, due to a bug they were equippable for several versions.

Obtaining

From 23w06a (a 1.19.4 snapshot) to 1.20 Pre-release 4, the player, armor stands, and mobs that have CanPickUpLoot:1b can equip jack o'lanterns. Some mobs can naturally spawn with jack o'lanterns on Halloween, however these mobs have a different drop chance for the helmet slot which differentiates them from mobs obtained with this method. It can be equipped either by interacting with it (for armor stands), equipping it in the inventory (players), or by dropping it near a mob that can pick up loot. They cannot be directly equipped with dispensers.

Observability

Jack o'lanterns that have been equipped in this way are directly observable on some mobs. They can also be directly observable on mobs that spawn with them naturally if the jack o'lantern is enchanted, which is directly visible and does not occur on natural spawns. For the mobs that can naturally spawn wearing a carved pumpkin, the player can kill the mob in an attempt to have the carved pumpkin drop, making this feature destructively observable, or observable at the cost of destroying the discontinued feature. These jack o'lanterns will always drop, as they have a drop chance of 2.0f (item is always dropped undamaged). This is different than mobs that can spawn with jack o'lanterns normally, which have a drop chance of 0.0f (0%).
