Java Edition:Invalid Data Value Stone Slab (Item)

Seamless Stone Slab.png

Invalid data value stone slabs can be created using block transmutation in several version ranges. Stone slabs originally only had a data value of 0 when they were introduced, as they had no variants. In Beta 1.3, sandstone, petrified oak slabs, and cobblestone slabs were added with the data values of 1, 2, and 3, respectively. In Beta 1.8 Pre-release, brick slabs and stone brick slabs were added with the values of 4 and 5, respectively. In 12w49a (a 1.4.6 snapshot), nether brick slabs were added with the value of 6. In 13w02a (a 1.5 snapshot), quartz slabs were added with the data value of 7. These additions recontinue their data values. The item form of the data values 8-15 was removed in 17w47a (1.13 snapshot).

Obtaining

From Indev 0.31 20100124 to Indev 0.31 20100205, random Indev transmutation can be used to obtain data values 0 to 7. This transmutation occurs randomly for any block placed, including stone slabs. The slab must remain in block form until Beta 1.3, where they can then be mined to obtain the item.

From Beta 1.7 to 12w08a (a 1.2 snapshot), either piston merge or liquid transmutation can be used to obtain data values 0 to 15. These methods can also be used until 1.2.3 for data values 0 and 7. Transmute the block and then mine it to obtain the item.

From 12w06a (a 1.2 snapshot) to 13w01b (a 1.5 snapshot), door transmutation can be used to obtain data values 0 to 7. After 13w01b, data values 0 to 7 are all obtainable normally.

Uses

Before the introduction of top slabs in 1.2, placing stone slabs with data values above 7 would create a double slab block with the same data value as the slab. These data values would later convert into their seamless variants. The seamless stone (dv 8), sandstone (dv 9), and quartz (dv 15) variants would each receive their own block ID in 17w47a (a 1.13 snapshot}, while the rest are deleted in 17w47a. It should be noted that before 13w04a (a 1.5 snapshot), any then unused data value of double stone slabs appears as the smooth stone variant.
