Introduction

Please read this guide before continuing, this is very, very important.

    • Most people will want to skip this guide, because it's boring. But you must understand the dangers of using OpenCore before you actually use it.

    • This guide will not cover every single Mac and every single issue, that would make this guide very, VERY long. So pay close attention so you understand what could happen to your Mac.

    • First, OpenCore is bound to not work at all.

    • There is a slim chance that OpenCore could corrupt your macOS install, and you will have to go back. This is why it is very important to make many Backups of your Mac.

    • Make a backup using Time Machine, not a third party piece of software. Time Machine is what we'll use if something bad happens to your Mac.

    • Also, make a bootable USB drive of your macOS (or OS X) version. So if something horrible happens, we can reinstall macOS easily, and start from the beginning.

    • iFixit has a link to making these drives: How to create a bootable USB drive

    • Make sure you click "About This Mac" and find the version your Mac is running. This way you will know what version to download.

    • Graphics:

    • Graphics acceleration is something that OpenCore has been struggling with for a long time. Every year, a new version of macOS comes out, and the new versions are slightly better graphics related. And that's why only so many Macs last for so long: They can't keep up with the new graphics.

    • So, if there are going to be any issues with OpenCore, it will more than likely be the graphics that struggle.

    • Graphics acceleration is the ability to animate objects, make windows translucent, blur objects, etc.

    • You can see the difference in graphics acceleration by the two pictures:

    • To avoid this as best as possible, you need to determine the power that your Mac has.

    • Generally, all Macs from 2012 onward excluding the 2012 Mac Pro have Metal support.

    • If your Mac does NOT have metal graphics, you not be able to smoothly run macOS Catalina, Big Sur, or Monterey, Ventura, and Sonoma.

    • Thanks to the new versions of OpenCore, graphics acceleration without Metal is nearly perfect. But, it is still not fully supported.

    • Here are the potential issues you will face:

    • No DRM Content. (This includes no DVD player, No DRM content online, no Music Videos from Apple Music, no Movies from the TV app, no photos curation, and no maps.)

    • Glitchy apps and animations. (Especially in the Menu Bar. There will be several glitches when using apps with no Metal.)

    • Apps Unavailable: (Some apps are completely unavailable without Metal. {Such as Garage Band, iMovie, Photo Editors, etc.})

    • There are potential work-arounds for these issues, and I will release a guide covering them soon.

    • Legacy Metal

    • Even if your Mac has Metal Graphics, macOS 13+ (Ventura & Sonoma) have a new issue with Legacy Metal.

    • If you have a Mac in between 2012-2018, it will probably fall in this category.

  7. DQiWkyxp6DWAJccL
    • Legacy Metal has the following issues:

    • No DRM content in Safari on macOS Sonoma

    • Paravirtualized Graphics does not work in macOS Sonoma

    • Memoji's Freezing/Crashing

    • Blackscreen on Continuity Camera

    • Broken Live Text

    • Green Artifacts on QuickTime Timeline for .mov files

    • Artifacts on Cropped Screen recording

  8. HrgvGqUYNC62LKG3
    • Bluetooth

    • This issue only occurs on Pre-2012 models running macOS Sonoma.

    • This only fix to this is resetting the PRAM / NVRAM at every startup.

  9. YhfLAgNwMcEouEUf
    • USB 1.1

    • This issue only revolves around any Mac Pre-2009 running macOS Ventura & Sonoma.

    • Apple dropped all support for any Mac that has USB 1.1. This includes Trackpad, Mouse, External USB, Bluetooth, and Infrared.

    • Because of this, running macOS Recovery is impossible, and therefore macOS 13+ cannot run on any Mac older than 2009.

    • OpenCore is currently looking for a method around this issue. As for now, you need to stay off of macOS Ventura and Sonoma if your Mac Pre-2009

    • Trackpad

    • OpenCore has not said this is an issue, but I have had some hiccups on my MacBook. Sometimes, the Trackpad Gestures randomly stop working.

    • This is an easy fix, though. I simply close the lid, wait a few seconds, and the gestures work just fine.

    • Other issues:

    • On rare occasions, there will be other issues that your Mac will face. In this case, you will need to refer to the troubleshooting guide of OpenCore: https://dortania.github.io/OpenCore-Lega...

    • Keep in mind that you. must install OpenCore correctly. If it does not work the first installation, try again. One missed step could cause the entire Mac to crash. So follow these steps very carefully.

Conclusion

Now, you may continue to the next guide, "Installing OpenCore"
