Background
The Lenovo ThinkPad W540 was a mobile workstation laptop from a Chinese multinational company called Lenovo. The ThinkPad lineup is a series of laptops designed for a business orientated or enterprise use. Most of these laptops can be easily identified for their black, boxy design, or their red trackpoint/pointing stick in the middle of their keyboards. The ThinkPad W540 would be introduced in around the late 2013 to early 2014 timeframe and labeled under the W series.
The W-series were designed to be mobile workstations, and thus would be considered more performance oriented compared to the T-series laptops. The W540 was no different as it came with 4th Gen Intel CPUs, along with a NVIDIA Quadro K2100M (or K1100M) GPUs, making it fairly powerful for a laptop at the time. Designed wise, it was considered to be noticeably lighter and slimmer compared to both the T4xx laptops, and the W530 that was released earlier in 2012. PCMag’s review had even praised the W540’s display and battery life as they noted their laptop model had a 3K IPS display that can self-calibrate, and is able to last more than 6 hours, and still be able to be swapped.
Despite no known manufacturer recalls, this laptop still had a mixed reaction for the ThinkPad enthusiasts, for one is the trackpad design. Many users, especially those used to previous ThinkPads, have noticed that the trackpad would not have separate mouse buttons. Coupled with the controversial keyboard design opting for a chiclet keyboard, and lower build quality compared to previous ThinkPads, it resulted in a poor reception to those in the community at the time, believing that Lenovo had strayed past the core principles set up by IBM. Ultimately both the W540, and the entire W-series would be discontinued at around the 2015-2016 timeline, where it would be replaced by the P-series lineup, which is still going to this day.
Identification
The Lenovo ThinkPad W540 can be identified by its designation under the bottom left of the display. Other notable features include a lack of separate mouse buttons on top of the trackpad, along with a red pointing stick much like other ThinkPads.
