Background Information
Knitting refers to the process of transforming yarn into knit fabric that can make useful or decorative items like sweaters, hats, gloves, scarves, blankets, etc. Knitting is done by using knitting needles to wrap the yarn around itself in a specific way and create stitches. There are a variety of different types of stitches that result in different yarn patterns on the final product. Knitters commonly follow knitting patterns that instruct them on the type and order of stitches necessary to create their desired product.
Knitting needles are commonly made of metal, wood, or plastic. Some knitting needles are circular, allowing the knitter to do more than they can with standard needles. The world record (as of 2020) for the largest knitting needles that have been successfully used to knit is held by Julia Hopson’s 3.5 meter long knitting needles.

- LYS= Local Yarn Store
- U.F.O= Unfinished object
- Frogging= when you give up on a project and rip out the stitches
- DPNs= double-pointed needles
- Casting on= getting your first row started (i.e. getting everything set up correctly on the needle)
- Casting off= finishing your last row without causing everything to unravel (i.e. getting your stitches off the needle)
