Background and Identification

Kitchen scales are used to weigh various food items. Kitchen scales allow for more precise measurements of ingredients than measuring cups, as well as the ability to conveniently track how much of your milk or produce your roommates are stealing. (Tip: you can even turn this data into a graph to increase food-theft guilt.)

Kitchen scales are a descendant of the traditional weighing scale. Although it is difficult to pinpoint exactly when the weighing scale originated, there is evidence of weighing scale mechanisms that date back to 2400-1800 BC in the Indus River valley. Additionally, scales have been traced back to 1878 BC in Egypt. The point is, scales have been around for a long time. Modern technology, however, certainly allows for more precise measurements, as well as more portable and lightweight appliances.

Kitchen scales today are produced by a variety of companies, including Escali, Amazon Basics, OXO, Etekcity, etc. Electronic kitchen scales include a platform with a weight sensor. They also have a display screen. Kitchen scales are designed to sit on a countertop or table. They are generally flat and not very tall. Most kitchen scales are primarily silver in color. Kitchen scales are not the same as body weight scales, which are usually larger and designed to sit on the floor.
