Yata (5e Race)

Yata

You know, there are places where the crow isn't a big bad omen...

Physical Description

Yata appear to be normal humans save for a third leg. This leg moves as a normal leg does. Yata always have raven colored hair and dark eyes. They have the ability to turn into crows. While in this form, they are distinguishable from normal crows by their red eyes and a third leg.

History

The yatagarasu was a legendary three-legged crow with roots as a motif of the sun, found across religions in nations all over the Kara-Tur continent. It was a symbol of rebirth after great tragedy, unlike how most perceive them to be bad luck or omens of death in Faerun. The yata are believed to have been humans who underwent this process of rebirth. Those who died in great tragedy have a chance at a second life, returning as a yata. In doing so, they become an image of the yatagarasu themselves and perpetuate the myth. Yata have, in some circumstances, been revered in place of yatagarasu, since they can take on their form. Yata who are risen experience that they know the "tongue of the gods" even.

Society

Yata are rare but by no means endangered. They live mainly among humans or other humanoid races. Their third leg usually gives them away as something of the supernatural, though people are usually a bit wary to oust them, particularly those who know the legend of the three-legged crow. The yata thus enjoy a celebrated status among others. In their own groups, small numbers of yata gather in covens, which are sometimes call murders, like a group of crows. They never stay long, usually just scattering off in their changed form. Because of their individual experiences, yata rarely get along, thinking themselves the more special one among their peers.

Yata Names

Yata take names from the lives they lived before rebirth sometimes. Others just rename themselves after grandiosity.
