An early fighter aircraft of the sort that was historically fielded in 1915-1918 during the Great War. It is equipped with a mounted machine gun, and it is useful for many sorts of purposes: reconnaissance, observation, ground strafing, and of course shooting down enemy planes and balloons. A typical fighter aircraft has a length of 20-25 feet, a height of around 8 feet, and a wingspan of around 30 feet. A fighter has a range of 150 miles on a full tank of gasoline. Some fighters only have one seat; many others, especially those produced during the latter period of the war, have two and can carry a passenger. In a single-seat aircraft, the pilot also operates the plane's machine gun; in a two-seater, the passenger is typically also a designated gunner.
