  1. "Ground-based effects" includes almost anything which could be ignored by flying over it, such as caltrops or the grease spell. If the effect is a fire or would otherwise reasonably reach more than 1 foot above the ground, you are still affected by it.
  2. This Ioun Stone can be used to satisfied the material component for scrying.

Wondrous item, rarity by stone (requires attunement)

See Ioun stone.
Arcane Knowledge (Rare). You gain proficiency in the Arcana skill, or a +1 bonus to checks with that skill if already proficient, while this rough, bronzed rhomboid orbits your head.
Attunement (Very Rare). While this blue-and-white gem orbits your head, you can attune to two additional items. While the stone is not orbiting your head, your attunement to those items is suspended and you no longer benefit from their magical effects. When your attunement to the stone ends, your additional attunements which depend upon it also end.
Beast Speech (Rare). While this silver-capped fang orbits your head, you can cast speak with animals without expending a spell slot. Once you do, you can't do so again until you finish a short or long rest.
Breath (Rare). While this tiny green spindle orbits your head, you can hold your breath indefinitely.
Endurance (Rare). While this dusty scarlet sphere orbits your head, you ignore the effects of one level of exhaustion. If you have six levels of exhaustion and you suffer an effect that would add another, you die.
Dispelling (Very Rare). While this marbled lavender and red ellipsoid orbits your head, you can cast dispel magic as a 5th-level spell without expending a spell slot. Once you do, you can't do so again until you finish a long rest.
Gazing (Very Rare). While this tiny fossilized eye orbits your head, you can cast arcane eye without expending a spell slot or material components. Once you do, you can't do so again until you finish a short or long rest.
Greater Protection (Very Rare). You gain a +2 bonus to AC while this deep crimson prism orbits your head.
Greater Reserve (Very Rare). This radiant blue-and-purple prism stores spells cast into it, holding them until you use them. The stone can store up to 5 levels worth of spells at a time. When found, it contains 1d6 − 1 levels of stored spells chosen by the GM. Any creature can cast a spell of 1st through 5th level into the stone by touching it as the spell is cast. The spell has no effect, other than to be stored in the stone. If the stone can’t hold the spell, the spell is expended without effect. The level of the slot used to cast the spell determines how much space it uses.
Identification (Rare). While this slightly pink pearl orbits your head, you can cast identify without expending a spell slot or material components. When you do, you can choose to change the casting time to 1 action. You cannot change the casting time in this way again until you finish a short or long rest.
Levitation (Legendary). While this spotty, black-and-gray sphere orbits your head, you can hover 1 foot above the ground at will, ignoring difficult terrain and ground-based effects.[1] In addition, you can cast levitate targeting yourself without expending a spell slot.
Longevity (Legendary). While this fossilized beetle orbits your head, you age five times slower.
Lore (Very Rare). While this shard of volcanic glass orbits your head, you can cast legend lore without expending a spell slot, and you require only 150 gp worth of incense. Once you do, you can't do so again until you finish a short or long rest.
Magic Detection (Rare). While this peach-colored crystal orbits your head, you can cast detect magic without expending a spell slot. When you cast detect magic in this way, it has a duration of 1 hour and does not require concentration. Once you cast detect magic in this way, you cannot do so again until you finish a short or long rest.
Magic Resistance (Legendary). While this marbled magenta and black ellipsoid orbits your head, you can use a reaction when targeted by a spell or magical effect to impose disadvantage on one attack roll against you or gain advantage on one saving throw made.
Pathfinding (Rare). While this red coral needle orbits your head, you can cast find the path without expending a spell slot. When you cast find the path in this way, you don't require material components or concentration but you do not learn the distance to the target. Once you do, you cannot do so again until you finish a long rest.
Plant Speech (Very Rare). While this smooth piece of petrified wood orbits your head, you can cast speak with plants without expending a spell slot. Once you do, you can't do so again until you finish a short or long rest.
Power (Legendary). While this pitch-black stone orbits your head, your cantrips are more powerful. When you make a spell attack with a cantrip, you deal additional damage to one of the spell's targets equal to your spellcasting ability modifier on a hit. When a creature succeeds on a saving throw to avoid damage against your cantrips, they instead take half damage but suffer no additional effects.
Reflection (Legendary). While this flat, mirror-shine stone orbits your head, you can use your reaction to reflect a spell of 6th level or lower cast by a creature you can see and targeting only you. The caster becomes the new target of the spell, using the same save D.C. or attack bonus. Once the stone has reflected 30 levels of spells, it burns out and turns dull gray, losing its magic. If you are targeted by a spell whose level is higher than the number of spell levels the stone has left, the stone can't reflect it.
Scrying (Very Rare). While this swirling crystal ball orbits your head, you can cast scrying without expending a spell slot.[2] Once you do, you can't do so again until you finish a long rest.
Spell Mastery (Legendary). When you attune to this item, choose a 1st-level spell you know or currently have prepared. While this glassy, prismatic cuboid orbits your head, you can cast the spell at its lowest level without expending a spell slot, and it doesn't count against your spells known or prepared. You can cast the spell at a higher level by expending a spell slot as normal. You can change the spell this stone affects by repeating the attunement.
Sufficiency (Legendary). While this radiant, pulsing diamond orbits your head, you can hold your breath indefinitely, you don't need to eat, drink, or sleep, and you cannot be forced to sleep by magic.
Swiftness (Rare). While this rough chunk of amber orbits your head, your walking speed is increased by 5 feet.
Truesight (Very Rare). While this milky purple gem orbits your head, you have truesight to a range of 10 feet.
Truth (Very Rare). When found, this glazed ceramic prism has 30 charges. While it orbits your head, you can expend a charge whenever you fail an ability check or saving throw using Intelligence to succeed on that check or save instead. The prism crumbles to dust when you expend the last charge.
Wakefulness (Rare). While this star-speckled stone orbits your head, you do not require sleep and you cannot be forced to sleep by magic.
Want of Knowledge (Rare). You gain proficiency in the Investigation skill, or a +1 bonus to checks with that skill if already proficient, while this jagged, cloudy crystal orbits your head.
