Creating a Vanguard

A female knight facing down a horde of hobgoblins on a bridge, as the last line of defense for a nearby village. A large Viking crushing his foes with a wide arc of his ax. Dashing out of the shadows, A samurai ambushes a warring kingdoms supply caravan, giving her people an edge in their endless fight. You are the peak of what a warrior should be. You choose to be the Champion of your Faction, the Knights, Vikings, Samurai, or the Wu Lin

Quick Build

You can make a Vanguard quickly by following these suggestions. First, Strength should be your highest ability score, followed by Constitution. Second, choose the Soldier background.

Class Features

As a Vanguard you gain the following class features.

Hit Points

Hit Dice: 1d10 per Vanguard level
Hit Points at 1st Level: 10 + Constitution modifier
Hit Points at Higher Levels: 1d10 (or 6) + Constitution modifier per Vanguard level after 1st

Proficiencies

Armor: All Armor
Weapons: All Weapons
Tools: none
Saving Throws: Strength & Constitution
Skills: Athletics, and your choice of Intimidation, Survival, Perception, and Medicine

Equipment

You start with the following equipment, in addition to the equipment granted by your background:

  • (a) Longsword or (b) Battle Axe or (c) Katana (Longsword stats)
  • (a) Any simple weapon or (b) Handaxe or (c) Longbow and 20x arrows
  • (a) Chainmail or (b) Leather Armor

Ability Score Increase

When you reach 4th level, and again at 8th, 12th, 16th and 19th level, you can increase one ability score of your choice by 2, or you can increase two ability scores of your choice by 1. As normal, you can't increase an ability score above 20 using this feature.

Viking Raider

At first level, you pick the faction of vanguard you belong to. Choosing the Viking Raider subclass, you add Strength modifiers to your weapons attacks, as long as you use any martial ax weapon.
