Feed (Su) When a barghest slays a humanoid opponent, it can feed on the corpse, devouring both flesh and life force, as a full-round action. Feeding destroys the victim’s body and prevents any form of raising or resurrection that requires part of the corpse. There is a 50% chance that a wish, miracle, or true resurrection spell can restore a devoured victim to life. Check once for each destroyed creature. If the check fails, the creature cannot be brought back to life by mortal magic.

A barghest advances in Hit Dice by consuming corpses in this fashion. For every three suitable corpses a barghest devours, it gains 1 Hit Die, and its Strength, Constitution, and natural armor increase by +1. Its attack bonus and saves improve as normal for an outsider of its Hit Dice, and it gains skill points, feats, and ability score improvements normally.

The barghest only advances by consuming the corpses of creatures whose Hit Dice or levels are equal to or greater than its own current total. A barghest that reaches 9 Hit Dice through feeding immediately becomes a greater barghest upon completion of the act. A greater barghest can reach a maximum of 18 Hit Dice through feeding.

Change Shape (Su) A greater barghest can change shape into a goblinlike creature of Large size (about 8 feet tall and 400 pounds) or a dire wolf.

Tactics

Rancavis is a foe that likes to take opportunistic attacks during battles. He has learned to deceive even the most observant of individuals. He has killed his share of characters, often much more powerful than himself using his followers and hit-and-run tactics.

A group will encounter Rancavis in one of several ways.

The Benefactor

Rancavis loves to use this tactic to help defeat enemies of his cult. He will disguise himself as some form of large creature (often favoring Celestials such as Solars and Lillends since groups of heroes usually respond well to them) and offer them a substantial reward if they dispatch of his enemies.

When the group agrees, he will leave to the enemy's camp using pass without trace and invisibility sphere on himself to avoid detection (recasting as necessary). Some enemies will become more alert when they hear invisibility sphere being recast in their camp every 10 minutes (he makes sure to avoid detection and will use dimension door if necessary to flee).

When the group arrives, he will cast buff spells on the enemy from his invisibility (moving each turn). If there are rouges in the enemy group, he won't hesitate to make them invisible as well (with a separate casting) so that they can get a sneak attack and good flanking positions. If the group wins, he will leave the area to make a nearby hidden group of his units invisible. They will then attempt to attack the group as they investigate the area. If the battle starts turning unfavorably, he will go invisible again, turn dire wolf, and then book it out of there (with pass without trace active).

The Invisible Helper

During a difficult fight, all of the sudden, someone invisible casts Rage on your party. He then starts running up to party members and casting invisibility sphere on them, touching with a large invisible hand). This helper is Rancavis. He will sometimes stick around with a group, buffing them through tough situations (recasting invisibility sphere as needed). He will not respond at all to questions concerning his nature and will actively try to stay away from the group.

Some groups become suspicious and he will leave if they seem too suspicious. Other groups will try to trick him, but he is too cunning to be caught (sense motive +18). Other groups will see this as a blessing and get used to the small bonuses he provides each combat. This is exactly what he wants. Sometimes he will trick them into agreeing not to attempt to unveil him and he will continue to provide benefits. He might say he was sent by a deity to help them, but must remain hidden so that the other deities do not see that he is interfering. He is very patient and will help for weeks if needed.

When the group gets a little too comfortable with the bonuses and he notices the right opportunity, he will suddenly start buffing the enemies in the next battle the group encounters. If they look like they are about to lose, he will help finish them off.
