This massive shield is used frequently in organized armies for its effectiveness at protecting soldiers and aiding in the formation of lines.

  • While wielding this shield creatures within 5 feet that you target with something other than the shield may use a reaction to use your shield as half-cover against you until the end of your turn if they beat you in a Dexterity(acrobatics) contest. A small creature may instead receive three-quarters cover.
  • As a bonus action you can hold your shield up in a direction to obtain three-quarters cover against attackers in a 90 degree cone, and half cover in a 135 degree cone, and forfeit your shield AC until the start of your next turn. Creatures in the 90 degree cone will be treated as lightly obscured to you. Additionally, when you are an obstacle to a target [PHB. p. 196] you grant three-quarters cover instead of half cover.
As a reaction while in this stance, you may change the direction your shield is facing to redirect the cones of cover or you may end the stance to regain your shield AC.

Shield AC/HP (Durability): Both wooden and metal varieties have 18 hit points and a minimum AC as described in the Statistics for Objects guidelines (15 Wood, 19 Iron/Steel). Additionally wood variants tend to be less sturdy when an attack hits the shield, iron shields will ignore the first 8 points of damage to the shield while wooden will only ignore 4 points. It's up to the GM's discretion to decide if an attack that wasn't intentionally targeting the shield would cause damage to the shield or not.
