Throwing Hammer (5e Equipment)
Throwing HammerMartial Melee Weapons
A Dwarven innovation in weapon design brought about due to improvements in dwarven armorcraft making increasingly deflective plate. The throwing hammer acts much the same as a throwing axe, but has much more weight, and lacks a discernable edge for the recipient's armor to deflect. There are many variations, but they all follow a basic form; a large, evenly balanced bludgeoning head accounting for most of the weight (usually a sphere or cube) and a stirrup extending from the base of the handle or flexible tether, used to spin the mass prior to hurling the weapon. Some fancy designs include a spiked top or a tail fluke. Because the stirrup (and handle if one is present) are only intended as a means of handling the mass prior to hurling it, they are typically very light, and rarely sturdy enough to handle the forces of melee strikes. When used in melee, a throwing hammer counts as an improvised weapon functioning the same as a light hammer. Making a melee attack with a throwing hammer will cause the handle/tether to snap if the attack deals more than 4 damage.
