Template talk:Welcome Message

Ideas

Does this sound okay? Better than the old one? What could be improved? Ideas? --Green Dragon 21:41, 6 September 2007 (MDT)

Seems fine to me. It is more informative than the last one, so I prefer it. --Sam Kay 09:14, 7 September 2007 (MDT)
Nice. Again, much more informative. Pwsnafu 19:52, 8 September 2007 (MDT)
Glad to hear that this one is a lot better :). --Green Dragon 22:13, 9 September 2007 (MDT)

Help Pages

Hey Green, I was wondering if there was a simple way of adding information to the welcome message regarding having a new user put themselves in the proper Classifieds category for their location. Thoughts? Also, perhaps adding a link to the Help:Portal would be good for new users. Thoughts?   Hooper   talk    contribs    email   18:40, 2 September 2009 (MDT)

After I look through the help pages (and organize them more to my liking) I will add something here most likely (;Help or who knows - it makes sense to me too). --Green Dragon 19:06, 21 October 2009 (MDT)
I added something. --Green Dragon 15:32, 13 March 2012 (MDT)

Suggestion

This is a really, really minor issue, but if you subst the {{PAGENAME}} variable then when the welcome message gets archived it won't say "Hello SoAndSo/Archive 1". Also I'm assuming, because of the way it's formatted, that you copy and paste this onto user talk pages. With a couple of strategically-placed includeonlys I think you should be able to subst the whole thing, which should be a little easier. JazzMan 17:40, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

Can you subst a signature too? --Green Dragon 15:33, 13 March 2012 (MDT)

Organization

Discussion moved from User talk:Admin#Welcome Message. --Green Dragon 15:31, 13 March 2012 (MDT)

What's the name of the template used to welcome new users? I've looked through the list of templates but couldn't spot it. Marasmusine 01:56, 12 March 2012 (MDT)

You couldn't find it because it is very well hidden. JazzMan 10:52, 12 March 2012 (MDT)
Ah. Ah, ha. I'll go back to manually typing "hello." :)
I put a welcome message there because I am uncertain if we should have one for use on the wiki (ergo a standard). I don't think Wikipedia has one, so I assumed we should do the same. Does this do the job well enough (balancing freedom of expression and precedents) or maybe a standard welcome message is better (so people know what to say, what is important, etc)? --Green Dragon 20:50, 12 March 2012 (MDT)
WP has a dizzying number of them to suit different preferences (long, short, graphical, plain, etc). I think yours is pretty good - we'll need a variant for non-admins to use, too. Marasmusine 03:08, 13 March 2012 (MDT)
I changed the wording a bit and moved the template, so it should be accessible and work for all users now. --Green Dragon 15:31, 13 March 2012 (MDT)
Wouldn't it be easier, since it's now a template, to get rid of all the "remove me" stuff? Instead of copy/pasting just treat it like any other template? It should be SUBST'd though, instead of left as a dynamic link. Also I'm not sure why we constantly feel the need to move discussions. This one made perfect sense where it is. JazzMan 14:51, 16 March 2012 (MDT)
Can you substitute a signature or would one's signature be added after the substitution? The discussion was moved since it is about this template. --Green Dragon 19:44, 16 March 2012 (MDT)
If you make the signature a variable I don't see why it shouldn't work. Testing with the deletion template:

I've commented it out, but you can see the results of typing {{SUBST:Delete|~~~~~|Because I said so ~~~}}. JazzMan 10:13, 22 March 2012 (MDT)
Ya, so it's the same problem (the date/user name is stamped). --Green Dragon (talk) 17:10, 27 August 2012 (MDT)
I don't see the issue here. Aren't date/times always stamped? When I change my time zone none of the times change. JazzMan 15:17, 28 August 2012 (MDT)
Format it how you are talking about, welcome some new users, and then I, like another user, can try it and make sure it works. --Green Dragon (talk) 16:46, 28 August 2012 (MDT)
There we go. Took me longer than I should have... maybe I should have waited until tomorrow. No matter, I welcomed TimothyLowestv and TheZat and it worked perfectly. JazzMan 19:57, 28 August 2012 (MDT)
No, their names were not substituted. "Hello Welcome Message and welcome to D&D Wiki" and the signature explanation is messed up. --Green Dragon (talk) 09:38, 29 August 2012 (MDT)

Reverted indentation to one colon

Try it now. For some reason it executes signatures within an includeonly tag, even if they are within a nowiki tag. And the Welcome Message thing was because I missed that it substituted somewhere along the way. JazzMan 15:45, 29 August 2012 (MDT)
It works well now. --Green Dragon (talk) 07:05, 29 August 2013 (MDT)

Minor Tweakup

Proposing a little tweakup. Stuck in appropriate commas, removed double spacing, changed wording a teeny bit to be more personable. As follows:

Welcome!

Hello {{SUBST:PAGENAME}}, and welcome to D&D Wiki! I hope you are enjoying D&D Wiki and have been finding the information here useful. Before you start contributing, we recommend you make sure your user preferences match your preferences.

Questions

If you have any questions about a specific page please ask it on that page's talk page. If you have a D&D-related question, you can ask it on DnD Discussions. Everything relating to D&D Wiki's administration can be found here. If your question does not fit into one of the above possibilities, or you need to contact another user, please use their talk page.

Formatting

Syntax can be very difficult, and if you need help a good place to start is Help:Editing on Wikipedia (or even their Introduction page). This will explain basic wiki formatting and should provide quite a few useful links that explain more specific areas of wiki formatting. Help pages also provide help in areas that have been decided as requiring additional explanation.

Community

A strong and welcoming community exists on D&D Wiki, and I'm sure you will find us friendly. To enable the community to function, policies are in effect. Most importantly, follow Wikipedia's guidelines on civility and etiquette when discussing anything and do not delete content. When posting, please ensure you sign your name with four tildes (~~~~) or by clicking on the signature icon (). This will automatically produce your name and the date. I hope you come to enjoy D&D Wiki and the community. Welcome again, you are now a D&D Wikian. {{{1}}}

I purposefully avoided any major changes, I don't know if it needs any. It just reads a little more naturally to my personal self, any thoughts, or radical disagreements? Though I'm guessing basically everyone would have to copy paste it with the original to even spot the changes. If nothing else, I'd argue at least line spacing and commas are just an objective improvement. --SgtLion (talk) 04:57, 7 October 2015 (MDT)

I think those changes are much better actually. I have implemented them since they mostly deal with better grammar. --Green Dragon (talk) 09:43, 8 October 2015 (MDT)

Templates

I think that the welcome message should make a handful of helpful templates more obvious, mostly Template:WIP and maybe a few more topical ones like Template:Adult Theme. SirSprinkles (talk) 02:06, 16 May 2017 (UTC)

I totally agree. I advise you to rewrite the message, or parts of it, so its current, concise, and interesting to read with good advice (e.g. templates). --Green Dragon (talk) 09:32, 16 May 2017 (UTC)
gollark: If you don't know where the internet HQ is, you can just make a GUI in visual basic to track their IP.
gollark: Don't know, I use linux.
gollark: `PiNG` or `Tracer-T` (`tracert)`.
gollark: ```I need to build as detailed an operational dossier on Stephen Bannon as possible in a week and a half. If any of y'all got somethin, DM it to me.```
gollark: It sounds funny, so me too.
