Talk:Scrivener (Pathfinder Class)

The Alchemy of words

Hello, my good dude. so the vibe I'm getting from this whole this class is that; Alchemist without alchemy? I have fallen in love with this idea. but, for how much I love it, the amount of thought into the balancing is not obvious to the casual observer. I just want to walk through the balancing relative to other classes of similar nature.

  • The Key feature of the scrivener: Scrivener is to Scrolls as an Alchemist is to Potions. Charms take the place of Extracts, Runes take the place of Bombs, and Tattoos take the place of Mutagens. Which is all a trade of power vs utility, at least in the case of bombs into runes and extracts into charms (although since the wizard/sorcerer spell list is bigger, charms are just better over all.) However this is a bit skewed in the case of mutagens into tattoos, at least if only in regards to scribe magical tattoo. To compensate for the pricing for the tattoo's; Added is Mage's tattoo and Mystic's tattoo. Unfortunately, Mage's Tattoo is severely under powered (with it only being 0 level spells) and with a lacks of a diversity of schools too choose from. but, Mystic's Tattoo comes in to save the day ... yet being 4 levels too late.
  • Now with Alchemist we also see this diversification into poisons and crafting alchemical items faster. We can't do that inherently with Scrivener due too the nature of scrolls, the thematic bent, and the fact that making a completely different and unique system of items dedicated to scrivener would be a ton of work if only to do justice by the class. tattoo's try to make up for this, but fall on the problem of not being early game accessible and being steeply priced, unlike mutagens. Then again, Mutagens do not scale well, is my understanding.
  • Lastly, Discoveries. Don't get me wrong, I love me some options. but, they take away from the time that Tattoo's will get there time in the spotlight.
(I did see the scroll crafter discovery, but it's only accessible at 10th level which is way past the time it could be really useful, not to mention the alchemist gets Swift Alchemy at 3rd level.)

Okay last thing. I love the concept and flavor, make's way for more trap mages. The way you got it now is functional, but the pacing of the class abilities could be a lot better. Take away one or two discoveries at the lower levels and put in Mystic's tattoo somewhere between 4th and 6th level, create something akin too swift Alchemy class feature and that's what I think would make this class shine. Again take my words for what they are, suggestions that can be ignored.cjtoddx (Talk) 10:27 AM MCT, 31 May 2019

Be bold and go ahead and make these changes. --Green Dragon (talk) 12:36, 31 May 2019 (MDT)
