A particularly difficult blight to deal with, residing within the heavily forested areas of Batheron's Heel, lives the Sharpened Slaughterfly. The Diptera Proecultro is a massive insect, close to the size of a fairly large dog. Incredibly territorial, many an adventurer has found themselves victims to their onslaughts. Sizing up at about two feet long, the slaugherfly is not the most physically imposing, with it's rather gangly limbs and eyes three inches in diameter. However, what it makes up for in strength is speed and, bizarrely, sharpness. All of the chitin covering its body is almost knifelike, limb segments reaching points, flat areas covered with serrated blades. The most obvious part of this is at the front of their head, a large spike jutting out of its face, presumably where the mouth should be. Unlike their smaller brethren, they don't have any wings, although two particularly large spikes on their backs signal that they evolved them away at some point, or were working on doing so. They are something beyond incredibly territorial. Doing so much as coming near it will almost instantly cause hostility, and this extends to infighting. They certainly tolerate each other more, but are still prone to stabbing each other at every opportunity. This is likely the only reason they haven't murdered swaths of the populace on the continent, as their numbers replicate fast. However, the way they replicate is more than odd. They have absolutely zero reproductive organs, at least seen from the outside. They can, however, absorb organic material, namely blood, through their spikes and into their bodies. This doubles as both nourishment and replication, as when they absorb very large quantities at a time, a small chunk of their bodies pop off, which rapidly grow into infants. This process, referred to as Sanguimorphosis, is almost the exact same as that found within the thri-manipulus race. However, they need significantly less organic material to reproduce. Unlike most creatures on Batheron's Heel, none of the sharpened slaughterflies parts are particularly magical or special. However, large amounts of their chitin has been retooled into armor. |
